Stains & stones is an exhibition of works by artist Charlotte Roseberry, a personal collection of recent oil paintings, exploring the complexities & nuances of motherhood.

Charlotte Roseberry was born 1989 in Sunderland, North East of England. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a First Class Honours Degree in painting and is now based in the Scottish Borders where she lives with her husband and daughter.

Her practice is an ongoing exploration into graphic surrealism, ambient clashes & sporadic outbursts! She creates bold, abstract oil paintings that have a clear trace of the hand done & a tongue in cheek humour.

Her interest lies in the process of painting, the material itself, the ways it can manifest and the constraints it propagates. The imagery within her paintings are made up of motifs; semi organic marks & forms. These serve as letters or symbols, allowing her to compose short sentences. They are workings out, sums, trying to decipher and understand things, breaking large ideas into their most simplest of displays, almost ideograms.

Roseberry reflects on our place in the universe; our significance or insignificance. She enjoys trying to capture elements of humanity in a space like void, a sense of humour in an oxygenless vacuum. Portholes of flat space & monolithic or phallic shapes regularly make an appearance within her compositions. They become methods of transportation through space and time while acting as a symbol for flesh, the soul, the human journey.
